SOAPCRAFTER MAGAZINE UPDATES

Soapcrafters Magazine is primarily about providing readers with first class recipes and articles on issues that affect them.  While we never set out to be contentious, our articles have made a difference.

INGREDIENT INSTRUCTIONS AT POINT OF SALE OR ON LABELS

A number of our novice crafters were concerned that some suppliers sold ingredients but did not tell them how to use them.  According to Trading Standards officials if a supplier reasonably expects novice crafters will use a product, then they are required to print instructions for use either at point of sale or on the labels.  Although there are some suppliers observing these rules and providing good information on their sites or labels, others are not.  Following our article our readers report that some suppliers have responded by including this information where they did not before.

'SELL ON' SAFETY ASSESSMENTS

Last year we highlighted readers' concerns over 'Sell on' Safety Assessments.  This concerned suppliers who have products safety assessed by a Cosmetic Chemist then sell this assessment on to their customers as a 'safety assessment' subject to conditions such as purchasing all ingredients for the formulation from that supplier.  We highlighted that not only was this of concern to a number of Trading Standards Officers and Cosmetic Chemists, a legal expert informed us these 'sell on' assessments potentially opened manufacturers to 'all the risks of litigation and no protection'.  At the time of the article one official spokesperson told us "We are grateful to Soapcrafters for pointing this out to us.  This legislation concerns protecting public safety and it is extremely unlikely legislators anticipated this type of use when they passed this Act.  We will investigate this matter further".

'BUSINESS ADVICE'

A Trading Standards Official has advised us that following 'concerns' one supplier has been visited and given 'business advice'.  Trading Standards officials will continue to monitor the position to make sure any advice is complied with and failure to comply could potentially result in criminal prosecution.

In the next year we will continue to bring our readers cutting edge articles, amazing recipes and we will continue to highlight and expose issues of concern to ensure that our readers receive the high quality of service they deserve.

Soapcrafters Magazine is published monthly and is available to subscribers online.
